Coming from New Mexico, I had a real affinity for the mountains and had gone up to visit my cousin who owned a hotel in Leadville, Colorado. By then Townes and I had become better friends and had connected musically, gettin’ together to pick over at the Truxillo house [in Houston].

One morning I heard this pounding on my door while I was sleepin’, and sure enough, there was Townes with a couple of friends. It was an honor that he even looked me up. I told him, “Hey, Townes, a friend of mine runs a little radio station up on the hill. What do you say we go over there and he’ll put you on?” He said, “Yeah, sure.”

Townes had a lot of energy and created a lot of excitement back in those days. Every time he came off the road all our friends would show up at the Old Quarter full of anticipation over what new tunes and stories he’d brought back with him. I said, “Well, Townes, what ya got, man?’ And he slung his old guitar on and played me “Pancho and Lefty” and “If I Needed You” back to back while we were sittin’ out in the parking lot, waiting to go into the radio station.
